The Museum Lolland-Falster

The Museum Lolland-Falster consists of four sections, which are partly situated in Maribo and partly in Nykøbing F. The two sections in Maribo are an open-air museum and a museum showing the history of civilization. In Nykøbing F, there is a museum showing the history of civilization and the Old Grocer's Shop. The different sections of The Museum Lolland-Falster give the visitor various glimpses of Lolland's and Falster's history from ancient to modern times.

The County Museum - Maribo's history of civilization
(Stiftsmuseet)

At Banegårdspladsen in Maribo you will find the old museum building from the year 1889 that contains the county museum. The large museum building was constructed for that purpose. It gives good possibilities for exhibitions on all 3 floors. Since its inception more than a hundred years ago, the county museum has displayed the history of civilization in the area covering all periods of time and subjects. The broad spectrum of exhibitions has characterised the museum from its beginning and a wide range of exhibitions still prevails today.
You will find a unique collection of crucifixes from the period 1250 up to 1350 in the historical building. This collection was restored during the year 2008. The crucifixes have not been brought back to their original appearance but left with their patina of the years. By studying the crucifixes in detail, the visitor might get an idea of how they looked originally, how changes have been made over time and what the newest restoration has meant. The museum also takes an interest in Polish immigration to the island and its importance for the area, past and present. Furthermore, the museum has collected and found many antique relics over the years. These are shown in different connections. The museum also takes the visitor back to Danish rural culture. Among other things, pictures, tools, furniture and clothes are shown. There are various special exhibitions.

The Tsar's House - a piece of cultural history in Nykøbing
(Czarens Hus/Falsters Minder)

The house of the tsar is situated in Nykøbing, viz as a historical half-timbered building from the 1690's. Here, you will find a piece of the town's civic history with its exhibitions of Falster's history.

In 1913, the Association for the Preservation of Falster's Memories /Foreningen til Bevarelse af Falsters Minder) was founded. The purpose was to establish a museum for Falster as a whole.. The tsar's house has been the framework for the collections since 1923. The museum was approved in 1945. The museum has been professionally managed since 1979. The museum has also had responsibility for archaeology in this part of the country since 1986. Falster's regional historical archives were a part of the museum, but in 1992 the archive was moved to a new location.

The museum's collection is a string of pearls consisting of authentic objects that depict Guldborgsund Kommune's cultural history from ancient to modern times.. The exhibitions at the museum show only a fraction of the collection. The collection consists of a variety of different antique artefacts like toys, textiles, Christmas decorations, tools and instruments; things that collectively give a more detailed picture of past times in both town and country to present and future visitors.

The exhibitions invite everyone to make a trip into Falster's past, i.e. to gain an insight into the island's town and country culture from the Middle Ages until the present day. Rural culture is represented by means of folk art, among other things, shown in the form of woodwork and textiles. Furthermore, there is a peasant room with a kitchen containing original furniture from the village of Horreby on Falster. There are also figures dressed in costumes from the 18th century.
The island's town culture and the life of citizens in the 18th century are demonstrated by means of a respectable middle-class room with furniture from that period. There is also a middle-class bedroom from the beginning of the 19th century complete with a washstand, soiled linen basket, a cradle and many other things belonging to the period.

Several articles for everyday use are represented; among other things, Danish, German and British glass, porcelain, pottery, tin, brass objects and much more.
There is an old street from Nykøbing dating from the end of the 18th century, which is a part of the exhibition. This street consists of typical shops, a goldsmith and goldsmith's workshop, a baker and a tobacconist with products from Nobel's Tobacco Factory - founded in 1835.

The exhibition also offers the possibility of gaining an insight into historical toys. Children of every age have the chance to experience their grandmother's or great-grandmother's dolls, dolls houses, cars, toys of sheet metal, porcelain and other materials: or grandparents can make a nostalgic review of their own childhood.

From the beginning, the museum has collected many different textiles. The collection consists of embroideries, textiles and costumes used by citizens and farmers over the last 300 years. Among other things are shown a farmer's party clothes and a madam's elegant dress. The wedding dress worn by the mother of Peter Freuchen, a local born author and traveller in Greenland, is also exhibited.

Everyday life on Falster during the Middle Ages is represented by the means of local finds. A farmer's belongings, the shoes of a monk, keys and tankards are among the exhibits. Building methods from the period are demonstrated by tiles and information about the technology. In addition, the collection from the Middle Ages contains a rowing boat from Guldborgsund, an ore pot with the bell founder's masterpiece from Nykøbing F, a censer from North Falster, mediaeval Spanish souvenirs, some shells brought home to Skerne, rings for a hearse drape from Stubbekøbing, combs made of bone from Nørre Vedby, iron knives from Systofte and much, much more.

There will be different types of special exhibitions.

The Open-Air Museum

The Open-Air Museum is situated in beautiful surroundings alongside Maribo Lake in proximity to Bangs Have.

The Open-Air Museum was built up in the 1920s and 30s and gives an impression of Lolland-Falster's farming community's culture and building techniques in the decades around 1800.
The museum consists of 10 houses, a farm, a post mill and a school containing an exhibition of the history of village schools.

A shop at the entrance to the museum sells books, postcards, sundry museum replicas as well as coffee, etc. Furthermore, there are gardens planted with medicinal herbs, vegetables and roses. The museum houses a 10 ton steam locomotive that was used for ploughing from 1872 until 1929.

The most recent building in the museum is a farm labourer's cottage from Godsted from the year 1872.
Furbishing of the cottage was started in 2007 so that in the future visitors will be able to experience a farm labourer's home from the World War I era.

A barn from the farm Gl. Skovnæs stands opposite The Open-Air Museum. This is from the 1860s and is a fine example of a large farm estate's warehouse during the height of prosperity for corn sales. The barn is now used for museum purposes.

The Old Grocer's Shop
(Den gamle Købmandshandel)

In the year 1995 "The Old Grocer's Shop", which is situated in the street Langgade 9 in Nykøbing Falster, was opened by the institution called Falsters Minder. Langgade 9 was built in the year 1810 in the classic style, and was restored in 1995.
The grocer's shop is a living museum built up around the authentic furniture and stock of goods found in a grocer's shop on Lolland called Skottemarke Købmandshandel. This shop was closed in 1987.
An epoch had come to an end and the last owner, "Lasse", Skaaning Larsen wished for the shop to emerge again as a museum for a grocer's shop.
In "The Old Grocer's Shop" you will experience the scent of freshly ground coffee from the spinning coffee mill, salt herrings and dried cod in barrels, brown soap in bulk, original carpet slippers and rush shoes besides many other things that typically belonged to Skottemarke Grocer's Shop during the 1950's.
At that time, when the goods were meticulously displayed on shelves behind the counter, when goods were sold according to the amount required by the customer, when goods were presented by the friendly and practised shop assistant, the goods, with all their spiced scents, really contributed to the atmosphere of the shop. Also today, the shop assistant, on request, will wrap up the goods in paper, and even provide a small stick to put through the loops in the string for easy carrying!
